LEE Staff Sgt. Dick Alson Lee, Jr., 31, of Keystone Heights, FL died when his
mobility platform struck an
improvised explosive device during a patrol on April 26, 2012 in Ghazni
Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned as a
military working dog handler to the 529th Military Police Company, 95th Military
Police Battalion, 18th Military
Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Sembach, Germany and was
deployed in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom. This was Staff Sgt. Lee s fourth combat deployment. He
graduated from Keystone Heights High
School in 2000 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2000. His military
education includes Special Reaction Team
Course, Warrior Leaders Course, Military Working Dog Handler Course and Advanced
Leaders Course. Lee s awards and
decorations includes five Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal,
three Army Good Conduct Medals, the
National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the
Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one
campaign star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Global War
on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal,
the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer
Professional Development Ribbon with
numeral 2 device, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon with
numeral 2 device, two NATO medals, the
Presidential Unit Citation Award, the Valorous Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit
Citation, the Driver s Badge and
the Combat Action Badge. He will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal,
the Meritorious Service Medal, and
the Purple Heart. Surviving Staff Sgt. Lee is his wife, Katherine Lee, a native
of Shreveport, La., and their two
sons, David, 4, and Joshua, 2; his mother, Brenda Carroll, and her husband,
Larry, of Keystone Heights, FL; his
father, Dick Lee, of Newcastle, OK; a sister, Vanessa Compton, and her husband
Danny of Fort Riley, KS; his
nephews, Zachary, Devin and Eric, of Fort Riley, KS and a brother, Michael
Carroll, of Keystone Heights, FL.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Jacksonville
