Greetings everyone, I hope this email finds you well….at least better than me.  Two days of budget is now behind us and these polyester pants are killing me.  Let’s go over some highlights for this week starting with our new-hires.

Speaking of LODD’s—August is the anniversary of 3 of our LODD’s:

  • Lt. Newton Eugene Johnson, Aug. 6, 1970-- Lt. Newton Eugene Johnson was overcome by heat and smoke and died when the roof of an A;P Supermarket at San Juan and Hershel streets collapsed while he was fighting a fire inside. It was his first day as a roving officer assigned to Engine 14. Lt. Johnson was posthumously honored as the Fireman of the Year.
  • William E. Albritton,  Aug. 16, 1986-- Engineer William E. Albritton died of a heart attack shortly after leaving work at Station 27.
  • Lt. Nolen A. Sauls, Aug. 7, 2000-- Rescue Lt. Nolen A. Sauls died of a heart attack shortly after leaving work at Station 28.
  • Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Somethng new I would like to add to the WIR is the Quotes of the Week; one serious and one funny.  I hope you enjoy and if you have one to share, feel free to send to me.

  • "No one would remember a good samaritan if he’d only had good intentions."…Margaret Thatcher
    • The point is what separates you from the rest is that you’re not afraid to act.  Keep up the good work out there both on and off the job!
  • "Monday is an awful way to spend 1/7 th of your life"—Steven Wright.   Amen.

Well that’s is for this WIR.  Sorry for such a short version but I’ve litterally been sitting in City Council for two days.  Oh my aching astronomy is truly one of my favorite subjects to read about.  Was that a run-on sentenance? J  All joking aside, I hope everyone has a great weekend and I hope you get to spend it with family and friends.  As for me, I’ll be in Welaka (best kept secret in north Florida) at the river (enter pontoon song) eating my weight in pizza from the River Pub.  Many of you know exactly what I’m talking about!

Please continue to have your thoughts and prayers with our folks as some are truly having a tough time.

NFL pre-season officially starts tonight for the Jaguars and if you haven’t seen the new scoreboards in action, you’re truly missing out on something cool.

As always, we thank you for what you do (fighting fires and saving lives), why you do it (slightly on the crazy side), and for always showing why you are truly the Best Fire Rescue Department in the Country!

Very Respectfully,

Kurtis R. Wilson
