Mr. Wilbur Gene Cox, loving husband, father and grandfather went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Monday, February 22, 2016. Wilbur was born in Scottsville, Kentucky to the late Robert Lee and Nina (Hillis) Cox on December 22, 1930. He graduated from Scottsville High School in 1948. On March 15, 1952, he married his soul mate and the love of his life, Helen Louise (Stewart) Cox, with whom he spent nearly 64 years with. He was a veteran of the Korean War and joined the Jacksonville Fire Department in July of 1960. From firefighter to Captain, he carried out his duties with diligence, pride and deep commitment. He retired from the Fire Department in January 1990. He then taught at FCCJ Fire Training Academy for five years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Starke, where he was a faithful member and taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years. and served as a trustee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golf, gardening and raising cattle on his small farm, but his first love was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, then family, firefighters, country, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Cox and Glen Cox and his sisters, Mona Leahy, and Nancy Claiborne. Wilbur is survived by his wife, Helen Louise (Stewart) Cox of Lawtey, Sons: Michael (Alwine) Cox of Windsor, CA, Robert (Donna) Cox of Sebastian, FL, and Richard (Mary Kay) of Westlake, OH, four grandchildren: Robert, Brian, Megan, and Erin Cox, two step-grandchildren: Darren and Sandy Natman. He is also survived by his sister: Ann Alexander of Scottsville, KY and several nieces and nephews.


Visitation was held at JONES-GALLAGHER FUNERAL HOME, 620 Nona Street in Starke on Friday, February 26, 2015 from 6-8 PM.


Funeral services were on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lester Austin Officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Crosby Lake Cemetery.
