CARROL JOSEPH HAYES

Mr. Carrol Joseph "Gabby" Hayes, 83, of Vero Beach, died October 19th, 2012 at Palm Garden of Vero Beach. He was born in Baxley, GA and lived in Vero Beach for 33 years after moving from Jacksonville, FL. He served in the United States Army from 1949-1953 during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hayes was a Lieutenant and a paramedic with the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department for 23 and 1/2 years before his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters. Following his retirement, Mr. Hayes began a second career in the family's Citrus business in Indian River County with Florida Atlantic Grove Service and Lindsey Citrus. Additionally, he served on the Farm Services Agency Committee. Mr. Hayes was an avid reader and a skilled gardener. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, taking photographs, and working outdoors. Mr. Hayes was a member of King's Baptist Church, Vero Beach where he served as an usher and greeter. He also was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at King's Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 37 years Patty Hayes of Vero Beach; sons, David Hayes of Winter Park, FL, Craig Hayes and Brian Hayes both of Vero Beach; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his daughter, Libby; brothers, Clarence and Edwin; and sisters, Mid, Eula, Bell and Lucy. Memorial contributions may be made to King's Baptist Church, 3235 58th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32966 in memory of Mr. Hayes. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m., Friday October 26, 2012 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A funeral service was held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at King's Baptist Church, Vero Beach with Rev. Frank Ellis officiating.
