Retired Battalion Chief, William Alton Smith, (90) brother of retired Thomas Leon Smith Sr, Uncle of retired Thomas ‘Tommy’ Leon Smith Jr, Great Uncle of District Chief Brad Smith F9-B and retired Donald Smith, passed away on August 23, 2013.

SMITH Mr. William Alton Smith age 90, of Keystone Heights passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at the Haven Hospice Custead Care Center in Orange Park. Mr. Smith was born on May 29, 1923 in Winter Haven to the late Wilbur Ernest and Iola (Daniel) Smith. He had moved to Keystone Heights in 1988, and had served our Country in the United States Navy prior to and during World War II. Prior to retirement, Mr. Smith had a long and memorable career of 40 years on the Jacksonville Fire Department from which he retired as Battalion Chief. Alton or Chief Smith, by which he was well known, was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Margret Smith, his brother Wilbur Ernest Smith, Jr., and his grandson Dean Stevens. He is survived by his siblings; Thomas Leon Smith, Sr. and Mildred S. James; children, Judy Sarbu (Ken) of Middleburg; Terrance Lee Smith, Sr. (Kathy) of Keystone Heights; William A. Bill Smith, Jr. (Linda) of Jacksonville; Gayle Ditto (Julian) of Port St. Lucie; grandchildren, Kristin, Jodi, Greg, Lee, Adam, Jeff, April, and Holly; great grandchildren, Tripp, Josh, Layla, Giada, and Asher. Viewing was Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 5 -8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services were Thursday, August 29, 2013, 10:00 a.m. in Freedom Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Herring officiating. Burial followed at the Keystone Heights Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of JONES-GALLAGHER FUNERAL HOME, 340 E. WALKER DR. KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, FL 32656.
