 Charles W. Strickland was hired by the Jacksonville Fire Department on February 15, 1948.  He began as a Private at Station #4, located at Jefferson and Duval.  He served at station #4 for 12 years, first as a Private and then as an Engineer.  He also served as the Chief's Driver and was a member of the first Resuscitator Squad in the 1950's. Charles Strickland was promoted to Lieutenant in 1965 while still at Station #4.  He then transferred to "Old Station #1" located at Adams and Ocean.  Charles Strickland served as a Lieutenant at Station #4, Station #1, and finally Station #2, located at 4th and Main.  He was then promoted to Captain and transferred to Station #7 located at Kings and Davis.  He served as the Captain at the old Naval Fuel Depot located on Hecksher Drive after the US Navy relinquished fire fighting duties to the City of Jacksonville.  His final assignment as at Station #9 located at 24th and Perry.  In 1972, while on the list for promotion to Battalion Chief, he tore ligaments in his knee and chose to retire from the Jacksonville Fire Department.  During the next year, Charles Strickland worked for the Firefighter's Union.  In 1974, he assisted in beginning the Orange Park Fire Department where he started as a Lieutenant.  He retired from OPFD as the Chief in 1989.

STRICKLAND Funeral services for Charles William Strickland, 86, were held 2PM Friday, September 14, 2012 in the chapel at JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME, 111 Blanding Blvd. Orange Park, FL with Rev Tim Martin from the First Baptist Church of Middleburg officiating. Interment followed in Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery's Masonic section. Charles served his country proudly in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, he was honorably discharged and re-enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He went on to pursue a career as a Fire Fighter and worked for the Jacksonville Fire Department and later was instrumental in starting the Orange Park Fire Department where he retired and served as Chief with over 41 years of dedicated service. After retirement Charles took a civilian s job with the Clay County Sheriff s Office working as a property manager for Dalton Bray. Charles was an avid Gator Fan and Gator Booster. He also enjoyed golfing and has won many tournaments. Charles was a member of the Masons and the Morocco Shrine Temple. Mr. Strickland survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marie Strickland; daughter, Sharon Harrison and her husband Dennis; brother, James Strickland (Geri); sister, Dolores Hickox (James); two grandchildren, Brent Harrison (Courtney), and Garrett Harrison (Sara); two great-grandchildren, Colton and Hayden Harrison, and many other loving family members and friends. Charles touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. The family will receive friends on Friday prior to the service from 1PM-2PM at the funeral home.
