Retired Captain Evans Howard (Left) writes the following:

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of JFRD retired Engineer ROBERT L WALTHOUR SR.

I’ve know him since back when I was a young volunteer fireman. They would sometime transfer him out to “42” and we’d sit and talk about one thing to the other. I really like Robert and he made a big hit with me because he loved country music. When I was hired in 83 and the next contract is when the differential pay between ranks were made around 84 or 85,us firefighters being the low men didn’t get a raise. I remember Robert saying, “that’s alright, every time I get paid I think, all this for me ?” And he’d just laugh😂. Robert was fun to be around. I never got to work with him after I was hired but I couldn’t imagine him ever being angry or mean. I can only remember him being Engineer on Engine 11. I’m told he had quite a few classic vehicles. Ever so often I’d see him in his “1950 Chevy Truck”. The last time I talked to Robert was almost 2 yrs ago. He did mention he had some health issues. Robert spent many yrs serving the citizens of Jacksonville and was a great person and great firefighter and those of us that knew him will miss him greatly. He has been retired now for 20 yrs. Rest in peace sir and thank you for your service and just being you.
